ABOUT DEEMED UNIVERSITIES
An academic institution that has been granted status of university by UGC(University Grants Commission) Act 1956 is referred to as Deemed University. All those universities that meet all the academic standards of UGC would get the deemed university status, for this the universities have to demonstrate excellence in the fields of research, education and innovation.
Following are the features of deemed colleges in India :
- They have autonomy to decide and create their own programmes and curriculums.
- Admission and evaluation systems are all conducted by themselves. They even award degrees and conduct research from their side.
- Many of the deemed universities are well known for their advanced research work, they even receive funding for conducting the academic and scientific research.

Difference Between Deemed Universities and Government/ Private Colleges :
The primary difference lies in governance, autonomy and recognition in between deemed colleges and regular medical colleges.

- Deemed Universities: These universities generally have a greater degree of autonomy, they are not under the state university system. They are free and independent to make decisions regarding curriculum, admission and other aspects.
- Government/Private Medical Colleges: They are usually under state/central universities and follow the guidelines that are provided by the state.
Recognition:
- Deemed Universities: They have greater flexibility in course offerings and infrastructure that they hold. These are recognized by UGC and courses are approved by NMC(National Medical Council).

- Deemed Universities: They can award their degrees independently, in multiple fields which can include medicine, dentistry and all other disciplines.
- Regular Medical Colleges: Especially all those universities that are not owing the status of autonomous, they award degrees basing state affiliations.
Quality of Education:
- Deemed Universities: Deemed universities are very well known for their research and innovation. The standards of academics are high and they also offer specialized programmes.
- Regular Medical Colleges: They have very little flexibility for offering new or specialized courses as they have to follow the curriculum that is set by the state university.
Admission Process:
- Deemed Universities: The process of admission is also independent. Students can usually clear NEET conducted by NTA and get in admissions at the university.
- Regular Medical Colleges: The admission process is generally governed by the state government or central body. Students have to give an entrance exam i.e NEET.
Important Considerations for Students Seeking Admission :
Students who are considering the admissions in deemed universities should check if the institution is recognized by NMC and the courses are properly accredited.
